“Green coffee” refers to the raw unroasted seed (beans) of the Coffea fruits. Green coffee beans are cleaned, dried, roasted, ground, and brewed to produce coffee. So what about makes it so special? A compound called Chlorogenic acid.
Chlorogenic acid has precisely been shown to inhibit the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase that supports the formation of glucose in the liver. It is also believed to be the source of coffee’s anti-obesity effects. Numerous studies have suggested that chlorogenic acid slows absorption of fat from food intake while activating metabolism of extra fat at the same time. Unfortunately, traditional brewed coffee you have been drinking isn’t a good source of chlorogenic acid. Roasting green coffee beans removes a large portion of chlorogenic acid. When not roasted, green coffee beans are one of the best natural sources for chlorogenic acid.
The most recent green coffee bean study was published in the January 2012 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity journal. Researchers tracked a group of 16 adults who supplemented with a special green coffee bean extract of chlorogenic acids at different dosages (either 700 or 1050 milligrams per day) for 12 full weeks. All of the 16 adults were considered overweight, as demonstrated by a BMI of greater than 25 (normal BMI is between 18.5 and 25).
The researchers used an extract that contained an ingredient called GCA, which contains a standard green coffee extract of total chlorogenic acids and other hydroxycinnamic acids that have been known to have antioxidant health benefits in the body. The result? The participants lost an average of almost 18 pounds which was around 10% of their total body weight and 4.4% of their overall body fat.
According to Dr. Oz, anyone over 18 years of age that is not pregnant should be safe to take this supplement. More studies need to be done to see the effects on pregnant women and children.
